Canonical (rel=canonical)
A code snippet that you add to a webpage's HTML header so Google can tell if the content on that page is original or duplicate. It is very important to avoid duplicate content issues on a website.
A snippet of code inserted into the HTML header of a web page to tell Google whether a piece of content is the original or a copy from somewhere else. The source content must be canonical in its own right, and content from other locations must contain the canonical URL of the original source. Canonicals can also be used to avoid duplicate content issues on a website.
